DGL002–Diploma in Gemology

Program Overview :

The Objective of this program is to impart knowledge of Gemmology (scientific study of gems) to the students and the people already associated with or desirous of entering in the field of gem industry as importers, manufacturers. As the program covers all the aspects of gemstone identification, it is useful for traders, dealers, dealers artisans and common people. It offers wide scope to those seeking job in the gem world & is useful to the hobbyists.

What you Learn :

Introduction: Definition of gemmology, Basic qualities, Chemical composition, weights and measure, Luster, Sheen; Opalescence, Adularescenec, Iridescence, Asterism, Chatoyancy.

Crystallography: Nature of crystals, crystalline and non crystalline materials, Forms, Habits, Seven crystal systems, Twinning

Physical Properties: Hardness, Cleavage, Specific Gravity (heavy liquid and hydrostatic Method), Fracture

Optics: Nature of light, visible spectrum, Light Reflection, Refraction, total internal reflection, Single and double refraction, Dispersion, Polarization, Refractive index and its determination by refractometer, Pleochroism, interference,. Jeweller’s Lens, Microscope, Spectroscopes, Dichroscope, Chelsea color filter, Ultraviolet light and x-rays, Polariscope.
The varieties and colors species, chemical composition and crystal system, physical properties, special characteristics and identification of the gemstones. Thermal Conductivity and Thermal probes. Synthesis & enhancement in gemstones.

An overview of Advance Technology used in Diamond identification (like FTIR, UV-VIS, Diamond View, Diamond Sure etc)
